Cran-Orange Scone
For me, the American scone is a reason to live here.
The cran-orange scone appears seasonally and ushers in what is known as the holiday season and all the magic that brings.
This scone and I have history.
The taste is full of memories.
Walking to work, coffee in the famed paper cup warming my fingers in one hand and scoffing my first cran-orange scone from the brown paper bag in the other, the snow biting my face. The sweet and sour, the dry scone softening with each sip of warm coffee.
To me It was just like the movies!
The next stop on the Cran-orange bus came 10 years later.
Starbucks had arrived in England and brought the Cran-Orange scone with it.
I sat with my friend as we waited to hear if our sons had been accepted into our chosen school.
I can’t figure out if the seasonal scone fits the timing of that day, nevertheless, I have bound that tangy sweet flavor to the triumphant celebration that Luke and her boy, Ben were in!
And now all these years later, Adam proudly brings this much coveted scone to our table.
The flavor transports me… that young woman (me), snow on her coffee lid walking through a movie scene, excitement in her heart for her life ahead and melds it to little Luke’s promising future.
I sit at a crowded table of friends as my mind flies through the flashbacks.
There’s no space for it in this moment.
I file it for now.
My future.
Luke’s future.
A total wave of hopes and dreams that never were.
So much emotion from this little cake.
